Cheeseburger Hero Challenge 2018

Who will be the next “Cheeseburger Hero”?

One of the first challenges we did was a cheeseburger challenge in the fall of 2016.  It was so much fun, let’s do it again.  Thank you to all who voted in the pinned post on our facebook page.  It is good to see you are still enjoying the Hero Challenges.  We do our best to make it easy, and look forward to learning a few new tasty burger recipes.

Here is how you can participate…

We will create a post/event in the Facebook group Backyard BBQ Heroes, If you are not a member already, please join us.  We are a friendly group of grilling enthusiasts who enjoy learning and are always striving to develop superhero cooking abilities.  We have a lot of fun in this group, we focus on encouraging and helpful posts and comments.  We are family friendly, and are quickly becoming known as the best BBQ group on Facebook.

Comment on the pinned post with the words “I’m in”.  The reason we do this is to have an idea of how many people will be participating.  It gives us a good gauge on how popular the challenge is, and if we are succeeding in our efforts to tell you about it.

The Burger Hero Challenge begins on Friday April 13th, 2018 and ends on Sunday April 22nd, 2018 9pm pacific. You can cook any day for the entire time, not only the weekends.

The goal of these challenges is to have fun, learn new stuff, and share our creations.  So when you cook your Hero Burger, take pictures of the ingredients, the preparation, the cooking and the final delicious product.  Please take a selfie with your finished entry and post that picture on the pinned post at Backyard BBQ Heroes group on Facebook.  If you do not want to take a selfie, then you can take a picture of your finished dish with any BBQ Hero beer glasses, Tshirts, Aprons, or even a printed copy of our logo.  We just want to make sure it was not a photo downloaded from the internet.

Create a post of your own, on the Backyard BBQ Heroes Group page, our regular facebook page, your own personal facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, etc.  You can share all of your photos there, ingredients, prep time, cooking, final product.  Make sure to use #backyardbbqheroes #bybbqheroes #heatthatmeat #cheeseburgerherochallenge2018 in any post so we can find it easily.

Going live is not required, but it is alot of fun.  If you want to go live when cooking we would love to see it.

So then, for everyone that posts a selfie picture in the pinned post on the Backyard BBQ Heroes Facebook group page will be entered into the random drawing for prizes from our sponsors.  That will take place soon after the end of the challenge during Rob’s coffee chat on a saturday, or maybe even a beer chat one evening.  We will keep you posted.

We do have our awesome sponsors, who many times like to contribute cool stuff as prizes, we will let you know what they are planning as we find out.  You can see and visit our sponsors here.

We are looking forward to having a great time with this challenge, feel free to join us!

What is this “Hero Challenge” I keep hearing about?

We started doing our “Hero Challenges” about a year ago. First the burger challenge, then the pizza challenge. We have had a seafood challenge, sky’s the limit pork, and a hot dog challenge as well. Each one has been so much fun to watch, and we hope it has been fun for all who participate as well.

What is a “Hero Challenge”? I am glad you asked. Backyard BBQ Heroes is a group of like minded folks who love to cook outdoors for our family and friends. We thought it would be fun to challenge our group to cook a dish and post pictures of it where all members can see, and describe the process. What the ingredients are, how you prepared them. How you cooked it, the finished product and description of how it tasted.

We love to flex our superhero culinary capabilities, and show the world how well we can grill a pizza on a Weber kettle, or smoke a pork butt on an offset smoker, or the classic hot dog over an open fire.

One of the reasons this has been so much fun to participate inand watch is that we are supportive and encouraging. We strive to maintain a supportive atmosphere in the group. Regardless of your experience, you can be part of the challenge and have fun doing it, knowing that you will not be mocked or made fun of if you mess up. Believe me, I have messed up my share of BBQ.

Learning from others and developing my cooking abilities has been so valuable to me. Before we started the group last summer, I thought I was a skilled BBQer. Since participating in Backyard BBQ Heroes, I have only experienced growth and development in my cooking abilities. Knowing I could reach out to the group with questions about how to do something always gives me courage that I will not end up burning or destroying the dish.

Our most recent challenge, the “Dutch Oven Hero Challenge” was a blast. From the moment Bob Trudnak (BBQ Guru, one of our awesome sponsors) and Rob Bower suggested it, I knew this one was going to be fun. I went out and got my own cast iron dutch oven and started learning.

We had so many people participate, the most to date on any challenge. This one did not let us down, it was fun to watch and see the great stuff people came up with, from delicious main courses to awesome desserts, and everything in between.

The winner of this challenge, chosen by Bob Trudnak, was Lander Martin. Lander has never let us down with his fun to watch videos of every step of the process. He is always so creative and I for one have a blast watching his challenge videos. Check out Lander’s youtube channel and see for yourself.

Join us on Facebook

So if you are a grilling enthusiast who loves to share your super hero abilities with others, or you are just learning how to grill and smoke meat, you are welcome here. We recognize there are many challenges and difficulties in life, our goal is to encourage and help in the midst of whatever you are facing. We are a family page, meaning kids and grandkids are welcome to be a part of the fun. Rob’s grandkids are always in on the fun at Papa Roc’s house of BBQ (Rob’s house), so we keep post on the page clean and kid friendly. We do not engage in political or religious talks either. Our focus is on what keeps us united, “Heating that meat”.

If this sounds fun to you, please join our group on Facebook. You can find us at Backyardbbqheroes on Facebook. Our next challenge is coming up soon, so watch for the pinned post in the group feed for instructions on how to enter and participate.

Bryant C’s “6 Cheese Pastrami Bacon Cheeseburger Fatty”

6 cheese pastrami bacon cheeseburger fatty.

1 pound 80/20 ground beef

Pastrami

Swiss, cheddar, colby jack, pepper jack, bleu cheese and goat cheese crumbles

Grilled mushrooms and onions

Bacon

I grilled the onions and mushrooms in olive oil until tender. Made my bacon weave and placed the rolled out hamburger in the weave. I then put the pastrami and cheese on. Followed by the grilled veggies. Wrapped it up and put it in my Masterbuilt smoker for 2.5 hours at 250. Viola!

Steve C’s “Sucklebuster’s Sweet and Spicy Fatty”

I’m calling this the Suckle Busters Sweet and Spicy Fatty.

I used Suckle Busters rub throughout this Fatty.

The inside was lined with Swiss cheese, cheddar/pepper jack shredded cheese.

Pace medium chunky salsa and Famous Daves Signature Spicy Pickle spears.

I used D.L. Jardines 5 star BBQ sauce towards the end to bring the Sweet to the outside of this Fatty.

I chose pickles for the inside only because I had never seen it done before. They held their flavor and texture perfectly.

Total cook time here was 3.5 hours. I had to re coal and chip twice. Rested for 30 minutes.

Maintained around 235 degrees on the grill, 300 at the vent on the Weber.
